Traditionally the period of Lent before Easter has been used to give up something as a sacrifice. However, for the past few years at OUC, the Outreach Ministry Team has proposed adding something new as an opportunity to learn about something in our world that we would like to help change. We encourage everyone, especially our families with young children, to take this time to talk about how we can use our gifts and our time to make a difference in the world. By allowing children to earn small amounts of money or donate some of their allowance to a meaningful cause, we help them understand that they too are important partners in sharing God’s goodness.
In an effort to promote living into Right Relationship with our Indigenous brothers and sisters, this year Change4Change will be supporting the Five Oaks Intercultural and Interfaith Education and Retreat Centre in Paris, ON, which hosts Wampum. At this youth camp, Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth learn about each other and the history of the Six Nations of the Grand River Treaty territory. The knowledge, understanding, acceptance, and compassion fostered through the camp gives young people skills they can use in their local communities.
Help send a youth to camp this summer. Each week we will be collecting change for our designated recipient during the Children’s Time. We will share the weekly tally of the change collected over the next six weeks. You might consider putting a jar on a counter in your home to collect loose change or specifically donate a certain amount of change each week or find other ways to gather small amounts of money for this appeal. After Easter our donation will go through the Gifts with Vision sponsorship program of the Mission and Service fund of the United Church.

We look forward to working together to share God’s Goodness this Lenten season!
