Adult Education and Health Promotion
The goal of the Adult Education and Health Promotion program is to provide learning opportunities that help our community members deal with life’s ongoing challenges.
By “challenges” we are talking about personal health and relationship issues, and difficulties in understanding, accepting and adapting to the constant changes in society and the way the world operates.
In the past we have offered workshops on the following topics:
- Harm reduction – what it is, what it is not and why it is important
- View the Harm Reduction Information Session, given on September 22, 2024
- View a list of harm reduction resources here
- Read about the United Church of Canada’s position on harm reduction: Call for Decriminalization of Illicit Substances for Personal Use.
- Being proactive and prepared for end of life;
- Caring for self as a caregiver;
- Dementia (Resources: 7 bilingual modules covering brain health, dementia, and dementia care, tailored for individuals living with dementia, caregivers, and people who want to enhance their awareness about dementia);
- Forgiveness;
- Prostate and breast cancer;
- Smart aging; and
- Understanding and relating to transgender people.
These activities were made possible through collaboration with staff from the Ottawa Cancer Clinic, Compassionate Ottawa, a lawyer, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County and the Council on Aging.
Moving forward we continue to listen to the voices of the Orleans United Church congregation and the wider community in an ongoing effort to understand what the current learning needs are. We welcome your feedback and ideas for future sessions.
